statement from monkeyboxing.com:

“Long known for its services to the funk with untold re-issues of super rare drops, Tramp Records also occasionally likes to release completely new material – if it possesses the requisite soul vibes. So much so in fact that they’ve created new imprint Tramp Tapes specially for such material. The debut seven inch drop finds deep funk man Lucky Brown teaming up with soul quartet TheSGs for some instrumental action on Mesquite Beat. But while it speaks partly of border cantinas in one-mule towns and drinks made of equal parts rattlesnake venom and peyote tea, the vibe is so earthy there’s an almost afro-beat element to things. Expect to find spit and sawdust rhythms, folksy flutes and yourself squinting into harsh sunlight whilst rolling a cigarillo between your teeth.”

(Out 3 February on Tramp Tapes)

statement from fleamarketfunk.com:

“Here’s some spooky and spiritual deep funk for you today courtesy of an all star collaboration between Cecil Moses & The S.G.’s and Lucky Brown. They join forces as Lucky Brown & The S.G.’s to do an interpretation of the collection of Lucky Brown original folk/ jazz spiritual tracks with deep rhythms “Mesquite Suite” recorded in 2015 deep in Texas Hill Country. While The S.G.’s themselves ( (Oliver Klomp – drums, Colin Higgins – guitar, Bob Heinemann – bass, and Marc Hager – keys) are a band that specializes in instrumental soul, like that of The Meters or the great Booker T. and the MGs, their instrumentation pairs well with Lucky’s experimental style, and this special 45 was born. The label, an imprint of Tramp Records, Tramp Tapes will be a series of deep, raw funk that is indeed inspired by Mulatu Astatke as much as it is inspired by The Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. The first single, “Mesquite Beat” is deep and funky in its own right. Not that hard hitting you might expect, but gets you deep inside with a heavy funky, Ethio-jazz, afro-soul feeling. With this record it is all about the feels. Get on a groove, feel it, and just let go. Haunting as it shuffles along, the organ work stands out like a lamp shining deep into the night while the horns and drums keep it moving long after that light has burned out. The flip, a more upbeat track, “Justice” features Lucky Brown on the funky flute and glides along quite nicely. The first record in the series, we are definitely looking forward to more of this out of the Tramp Tapes imprint. Out February 2nd at finer record stores and in the Tramp store.”
